Polly receiving MBE Today

Post by sau »

A bit out of place for me. Considering the last album was about - my interpretation anyway - the madness of Empire.
I always considered Polly outside the mainstream, independent; among the many things that make her great.
I just hope that next time she is in the presence of David Cameron she is as forthright in her comments about arts cuts as she was on The Andrew Marr Show in 2011.

I like independence in Arts before getting close to the Establishment. Still bloody love her and her music.

Most Excellent Order of the British Empire!:

Wiggins is so superbly unassuming, he looks like he's about to say 'Pop the gold medal in the post, I'm nipping out for some biscuits'

Points well taken, I don't have any idea how they determine who gets these. But you know, THE QUEEN!

I completely agree with you sau, this is a little disappointing. It seems that Polly wants to be an oppositional voice from within the establishment. Not a strategy I'm especially comfortable with, but it sure is better than not bringing politics (as if everything isn't political) to one's art at all.

Polly's Polly. I don't think she thinks in simplistic terms like 'the establishment', left, right, or even male & female. She's never going to conform to whatever outlook you would like her to have (viz her remarks about fox hunting).

Polly seems to keep herself to herself, therefore our knowledge of her views on anything and everything is very limited. It's none of our business, unless she makes her views known. We can't presume to know what she might think. And it doesn't matter a fuck wether we're comfortable with it or not. She puts her art out there and it seems to me to be a case of take it or leave it as it should be with all art.

I think she should be proud for all of her acomplishments, never mind who gives the award, it's award for her work and not for her political views. Congratulation PJ

No, not "dame PJ Harvey". MBE stands for "Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire", which is the lowest class in the order of chivalry. Only GBEs and KBEs/DBEs, which are the two highest ranks, can be called "sir" or "dame".
