LES Mercury Prize Nomination

Not really one for these sorts of 'competition' but Mercury is probably the best of them. Expect them to give it to the one everybody least expects as usual though
Anna Calvi well deserved too, stunning debut

For the last few days bookmakers have considered her the joint favourite with Adele and then outright favourite.
Wiggins is so superbly unassuming, he looks like he's about to say 'Pop the gold medal in the post, I'm nipping out for some biscuits'

Re: Mercury Prize
And now a few words from the talented lady herself (this year's Mercury prize winner):
Harvey said, "I am thankful for this recognition of my work, and look forward to finally being able to attend the event in person in September."
This is Harveys fourth nomination; she was previously nominated for Rid of Me in 1993 and To Bring You My Love in 1995, and in 2001 she won the award with Stories From The City, Stories From The Sea. She accepted the award from her hotel room in Washington DC on September 11, 2001. This latest nomination also marks 10 years since she became the first female to win the Mercury prize and Harvey now stands alongside Radiohead as the most nominated artist in the prizes history. The Awards take place on September 6th.

Re: Mercury Prize
Clear hint: she would not attend the show for only being nominated.

Really? So it's like the Grammy's?
But seriously, I hope that's true. I haven't listened to the other albums that have been nominated, save for a few Adele tracks which I now admit to publicly. /shame. Anyone here have and care to share their thoughts?
Re: Mercury Prize
all acts nominated attend and perform a song on the night, winner is also decided on the night.. so no clues by who is or isnt there
Re: Mercury Prize
Mercury is a strange one Pitifuljoy as it covers all genres. For all I know one of the others might be the best C+W or Rap record in existence though I'm unlikely to give them a listen! Adele would seem a bit contemporary for their usual winner though. Having said that I think Polly has a really strong chance given the albums theme/originality, though would be delighted if Anna Calvi won it also.

Well deserved nom
Re: Mercury Prize
From today's Daily Mail:
P. J. HARVEY: Let England Shake (2/1)
WHO IS SHE? A Mercury veteran nominated for a record-equalling fourth time.
WHAT’S HER SECRET? On her eighth album, Harvey is still coming up with fresh ideas. Let England Shake delves into military history, from Gallipoli to the Somme.
CAN SHE WIN? Front-runner, but not exactly an easy listen.

Re: Mercury Prize
Who cares about awards? I find it strange that she seems keen to cozy up to these sort of establishment events, especially given her statements in the past about how she doesn't know or necessarily respect the opinions of the people choosing the winner. I mean, look at the nominees. 90% vapidity.
