Geoff Barrow, of Portishead, on twitter - admittedly he is a bit biased, being a mate of Polly's - commenting on Channel 4's Culture Editor's comments.
'If the culture editor at C4 thinks this "PJ Harvey wins Mercury for obscure album no-one liked or bought - how predictable!" god help us all'
Some good responses by readers in comments section:

PJ Harvey mix up: Newcastle man mistaken for singer
Some tweeters were still convinced Philip John was really Polly Jane but, as the mix-up became clear, the jokes started. One user tweeted: "I shall follow you anyway but I expect an album by this time next year."
PJ Harvey's publicist says she does not use Twitter.[/color]
Oh that Polly
Jane Harvey...
Can you imagine PJ using twitter? The lady didn't even own a computer until that long ago, I doubt she'd ever have any interest in twitter lolol

God I feel sorry for PJ that she always has to repeat the same thing again and again, how annoying...

Yea for Polly! I've always admired her for following her own artistic vision, wherever it leads.

Thankyou for posting the Geoff Barrow comment. I can't believe that man (not GB) is the culture editor - he sounds like he needs to do a basic course, maybe entitled something like "what is culture?" - essay question could be "do sales correspond to quality" or something. Sorry, ranting a bit because I am so excited for Polly and the band , and so shocked that there are idiots like that out there also the Daily Mail who seem to think its a fashion contest.
Um, I don't often post here but I often read other people's. But it seems to be much quieter lately - does anyone know why? Is everyone just lurking like me?

congratulations to Polly and the band for the so well deserved award last night, and the ongoing success of the message of LES. i was in a taxi and heard it announced live on radio and i felt genuinley elated. i have loved Polly's music for 20 years and whilst its hard to have favourites, LES is.
I loved her compsure in the midst of the flashbulbs and applause. i know this really doest matter in the context of anything but i wonder who was the woman she hugged when it was announced, is that her manager ?

Those people are idiots. It's not a damn popularity contest for fuck sakes. That's why this award is separate from the rest. If you want popularity, watch the Brit Awards or The MTV Music Awards. Jesus
This place is quiet because Polly hasn't been doing much besides just touring I guess. It comes and goes.
I think Polly should spend her winnings on, oh, I dunno, funding a U.S. tour maybe?

Nice to see Katy B being a good sport:
"Katy B told me: “PJ’s earned her win.
“She wasn’t able to enjoy it properly last time, so it’s only fair she can have a decent celebration this time.”

I've been reading a few reactionary articles floating around. I really should ignore the comments

. But I am most surprised I haven't read the "PJ Harvey is a chick?!" comments yet...

^ To be honest that's what I thought a few years ago before I got into her music. I was like "What kind of music does that PJ Harvey dude make, he must make some sort of trip hop." I laugh at it now because it never occurred to me to search itunes earlier.
*you now have permission to facepalm*

Haha don't worry. I too made that mistake when I was 16. The internet wasn't what it is today back then, so my friend quickly corrected me. Her "stage" name isn't exactly overly feminine.
