At the very beginning of the Amazon sample for "England" there is a sample from this song. It's the vocal run at 0:29: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w9QRNgWFDVE" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
You can find it on this extraordinary compilation of music from Baghdad in the 1920s. I love that PJ digs this stuff! Honest Jon's puts it out (Damon Albarn's boutique label...not exactly a fan, but his taste in music is excellent): http://www.honestjons.com/label.php?pid=33043" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Britain has a long, shameful colonial history in Iraq, so I guess she was thinking about that when she threw that in.

Hi,
Long time lurker here.
Just wondering if anyone knows whether 'the guns called me back again' will be available digitally, other than on US itunes? I've pre-ordered the CD of LES, and will buy the 7" of 'the words that maketh murder' but I really want an mp3 of it too. I don't use itunes, but is it even possible to buy stuff from the US store if I'm in the UK?
PS, Soulfadelic - that compilation looks incredible, might have to get hold of it. I'm not really a fan of Mr Albarn, but he does like and promote some interesting music to people who otherwise would probably never hear it.

Big thankyou for that, soulfadelic. If I remember rightly, Iraq had a parliament, but the British got rid of it! You have to love this one: Britain and the US helped set-up the Saudi regime back in 1921!soulfadelic wrote:At the very beginning of the Amazon sample for "England" there is a sample from this song. I can't help thinking about the journalist Robert Fisk re. Polly's new work. I've been wondering for a long time whether she has read his writings; his 'The Great War for Civilisation', in particular.
Here's one of his articles about Iraq - 'Iraq, 1917'
'They came as liberators but were met by fierce resistance outside Baghdad. Humiliating treatment of prisoners and heavy-handed action in Najaf and Fallujah further alienated the local population. A planned handover of power proved unworkable. Britain's 1917 occupation of Iraq holds uncanny parallels with today - and if we want to know what will happen there next, we need only turn to our history books...'
Rest of the long article here:

The Independent now has a page for all of his articles:

Wiggins is so superbly unassuming, he looks like he's about to say 'Pop the gold medal in the post, I'm nipping out for some biscuits'

Anyone else notice the clips on amazon.co.uk are gone?
The tracks are there, but there's no links to click to play the samples.
