Washington Post's Allison Stewart picks her top 10 albums of 2011:

1. PJ Harvey: "Let England Shake"

This concept album about war, which loosely invokes the Gallipoli campaign, is raw and literate and shattering. Not just the year's best, but the most quietly remarkable album in ages.

I'm new to looking in depth at these end of year lists. Is it a normal occurrence that one album sweeps way ahead on seemingly the whole of the planet like this?

Everything about this album is stunning, and I'm still being stunned.

It really is terrific to see this consensus being built around LES as 2011's greatest album. I do think Polly kind of "forced" all these publications to be in awe of the album, because frankly I can think of almost no one in music who has the courage or skills to do something like LES, with its weighty subject matter.

Number 1 on Mirror newspaper's list:

'1 PJ HARVEY Let England Shake

Taking wars old and new as its subject matter and drawing on a fascinating blend of folk songs and battle ballads, this was the year's most inventive and resonant album. Bold and meticulously planned, it was another brilliantly conceived and executed departure for Harvey.'
