Re: Last movie you watched?
saw Pirate Radio & An Education. Pirate Radio is fine for one time; I suggest An Education, though, thought it was pretty good. it'll be so weird seeing the lead actress in anything not set in the 1960's though, she's too perfect for that time period.
if there's a want for something new, you might find me at the start, or where it ends for you.

Ascenseur pour l’échafaud (lit. "Elevator for the Scaffold", retitled "Elevator to the Gallows"), by Louis Malle, from 1958, a truly captivating movie, why they hardly ever make any crime thrillers this good nowadays.

Oh yes. Well done, Pollyphoniac; I like that one. I have the video somewhere.Pollyphoniac wrote:Ascenseur pour l’échafaud (lit. Also known as 'Lift to the Scaffold'.
Lovely Jeanne Moreau and a lovely score by Miles Davis.
"I was split between my tremendous admiration for Bresson and the temptation to make a Hitchcock-like film" - Louis Malle

Wiggins is so superbly unassuming, he looks like he's about to say 'Pop the gold medal in the post, I'm nipping out for some biscuits'

Re: Last movie you watched?
that should be the UK release, "lift" being the standard British word for "ascenseur" whereas "elevator" is more of American usage.sau wrote:Oh yes. Well done, Pollyphoniac; I like that one. Re: Last movie you watched?
I watched The Wrestler and Up. The Wrestler was disappointing, I had read glowing reviews about it, and it wasn't bad, just, as you say, meh.
Up was more enjoyable, but I'm getting the feeling that either the producer John Lasseter or Pixar has a formula book handy. Good movie, yet pretty familiar somehow.

Re: Last movie you watched?
I found Avatar a bit cheesy. The dialogue was awful, but the visuals were gorgeous. If the visuals weren't a big part of this film, I don't think I would have enjoyed it.Hell and High Water wrote:Saw Avatar tonight, pretty familiar themes, but I liked the mythology. I wanna be a big blue guy!
Up In The Air - Now, I'm not the biggest George Clooney fan by any means, but I absolutely believed him in this role and loved this movie very much.
God On Trial - It reminded me a bit of "12 Angry Men" but instead of a kid being on trial for murder, its God. And instead of a courtroom, it takes place at Auschwitz, the death camp. They go back and forth with believers and non believers. I loved every minute of it. Very thought provoking, emotional stuff.

Re: Last movie you watched?
I pretty much agree, most of the plot, the themes and the dialogue would have made a pretty poor film if it weren't for the setting and the visuals. For some people the script is terrible and for that the film fails, but for many the script including myself, the script is merely familiar and the visuals and mythology make the film.Pitifuljoy wrote:I found Avatar a bit cheesy.
