Been doing a lot of movie watching as of late:
-finished watching the movie Man Bites Dog yesterday, about a film crew that follows a serial killer on his rounds
-today I watched Born Into Brothels, doc about children in the red light district in Calcutta; the filmmaker gives the children cameras so we can see their world through their eyes.
-The Strangers-- SUCKED. There was one part where I jumped and screamed, I admit, but that was followed with about 10 minutes of laughter.
-At this very moment I'm watching Saving Private Ryan

I bought the video of 'Man Bites Dog' when it was released. Good to know you are watching challenging films like that, E. I think two members of the film crew following him are played by the co-directors. One died very young. 'Man Bites Dog' is the only film they directed together.

I always recommend 'Come and See' (Idi i smotri); I reckon it is possibly the best war film ever made. Once seen never, ever forgotten.

Here's my nearest indie cinema - The Duke of York's. A little oasis. The oldest cinema in Britain still operating.

I don't visit as much as I should. The legs on the roof were on the balcony for the Brighton Festival one year. The owners liked them so much they put them on the roof where they have stayed ever since.

that's sad about the one director; definitely one of the most interesting films i've ever seen and i don't think i'll forget that movie. love the look of it too. i'll look into "come and see," i love movie reccomendations :) have you seen gummo? i think that's one of those movies that you get it or you don't and you love it or hate it. personally, i love it and find it hilarious, plus, whenever i go to cincinnati, i pass xenia where it's based in and i'm always tempted to stop by.

here's my beloved theater, cedar lee:

and the sweet mural on the back of it:

Like the muriel, sorry...mural. :-)

I know of 'Gummo' but have never seen it. I'm hoping to see 'Moon' this week.

A big favourite of mine is 'Exotica', directed by Atom Egoyan. I love everything about it. Music by Mychal Danna is wonderful. Mia Kershner dancing to Leonard Cohen's 'Everybody Knows'...in a schoolgirl uniform:

Some of Danna's music here.I like what Elias Koteas' character says between 1.00 to 1.40. One of those times when a character in a film says something that could be said by me. Strikes a chord.

One more recommendation: the Japanese film 'Afterlife'.

Very emotional and gripping film. It didn't feel like I was watching a movie at certain points.

^ i've heard of that, it's on my movies-to-see list.

i've seen part of exotica, but just a part with mia kirshner cause... she's mia kirshner  i should watch the whole thing. with Danna do you mean Michael Danna like the guy that wrote the soundtrack to girl, interrupted?

I just got the soundtrack to Moon; Clint Mansell is one of my top composers. Lux Aterna from Requiem For A Dream is completely haunting, eerie, and beautiful. And The Fountain Soundtrack is just so powerful and sometimes simple. so gorgeous.

Just finished Transamerica. Felicity Huffman should've won the Oscar for that. Amazing.

Inland Empire (for the third time!) , La Niña Santa ( a film by Lucrecia Martel, an argentinian director who is my favorit, did you ever hear about her?) and La Vie En Rose

yep, i would say so.

the closest independent theater to me is 45 minutes away, a short travel for a movie that will actually make me think. anyone hear of in the loop? it's a brit movie and it looks hil-ar-ious.
we have some independent theaters too but recently some of them are intercepted by some big companies and transformed into commercial cinemas or simply bankrupt :( i checked "in the loop" and this movie for example doesn't have premiere here at all :eyeroll:

if you're sick of waiting, you can download this movie from here:

http://thepiratebay.org/search/in%20the%20loop/0/99/200

thepiratebay.org is an excellent website for finding movies, both commercial biggies and more hard-to-come-by features.
