I really am a big fan from Tori, I love Tori but I do not know what happens with she, but since Scarlet's Walk I think she need inspiration, their albums are good but boring,I feel that Tori is not the same as before, and I still expecting a record that it surprised me,I miss the old Tori....always surprised me...well is my humble opinion about the last 4 albums from Tori :tear:

Excellent recording, I agree.

Thank you very much, it's one of the best group of files I've heard from this tour, even though they are mp3. Could it be due to band absence?

generally speaking I think it's more difficult to capture the sound of a band with good audio quality than it is to record the music played by a single person before an audience. the sound made by one woman with a piano (or an organ) is more easily reproduced through the recording equipment, whereas the simultaneous presence of drums and guitars make for a more complex structure of sound which it is harder to make a good recording of.

I share this sentiment, but only as long as we speak of Tori's studio recordings. if I should rank her albums I would unhesitatingly place the first four (not counting YKTR) on top, way above all her later work (and I might not even have become a toriphile if I had only listened to her later albums).

but her live performance, that's where she continues to excel, and actually she is better as a live performer than ever before. not only are most of her songs better when she plays them live, but a lot of her old songs have become even better when done in different versions. I've become even more aware of this now (these past few days and weeks) by listening to some live recordings from the mid-90s and comparing those songs (the way they were performed) to the way she has played them on this recent tour.

Sign me up for this. Tori's still one of my very favorite artists for her work up to Scarlet, but it's sad to see her talent being wasted in so much mediocrity. I find myself listening to her older stuff all the time.

I haven't really listened to her latest live material so I'll follow Pollyphoniac's cue. Maybe it'll make me less sad.

I agree with all of you, just partialy. I do love of course, LE, UTP, BFP and FTCH, very very hard. I can still hear them and enjoy them as greatfully as I did before. Nevertheless, I also love much TVAB. It is a complete break for Tori to new sounds, approaching to more modern or prog mood (Disc 1) and live versions on Disc 2 are really great, I use to like them more than album versions, especially Precious Things, Cornflake Girl and The Waitress. Disc 1 is excellent, and it let us explore great stuff created under a very rich research and experimentation by her. It sounds like "other Tori", as good composer as she had done four albums before, making amazing songs too.

This research for innovation, is also clear in Strange Little Girls work. Even though all songs in it are covers, I think they are excellent covers, which really add a new sense and ambient to the originals. Inviting musicians like Adrian Belew, let us know what she is trying to do, what she is trying to express.

After this one, Scarlet’s Walk. Other master piece, (IMO).

Regarding newer albums, what I have felt (and agree with you) is that they are not as good as earliest as “complete albums”. However (taking an old Pocket Knife comment), with a pair of scissors you can extract many (many) master pieces too. Just take them individually. Would you throw away any of these songs?

General Joy
Barons of Suburbia
Sleeps With Butterflies
Parasol
The Beekeeper
Toast
Original Sinsuality
Marys Of The Sea
Angels
Code Red
Dark Side of The Sun
Smokey Joe
Dragon
Father’s Son
Teenage Hustling
Devils and Gods
Fat Slut
Girl Disappearing
Secret Spell
Roosterspur Bridge
Beauty of Speed
Give
Strong Black Vine
Flavor
Curtain Call
Welcome To England
Starling
Fast Horse
Lady In Blue

Just one of these, makes any album worthily.

I’m not able to talk about Midwinter Grace yet. I’ve just received my album from Amazon, so I don’t know it really. However, I’m starting to enjoy much A Silent Night With You.

^I wouldn't throw all of these away (though some I would, but that's just personal taste), and I still think her latest could've been good albums had she edited out half of the songs. Nevertheless, I find it hard to put what are good songs from the latest albums on the same level as her great songs from 1992-2002. Here's what my list of great songs post-TBK would look like:

The Beekeeper
Toast
Garlands
Girl Disappearing
Father's Son
Code Red
Roosterspur Bridge
Smokey Joe
Dragon
Give
Curtain Call
Lady in Blue

A lot shorter than yours ;) I'm pretty sure I could extract that number of great-Tori-songs from Pele alone.

I agree about Scarlet (one of my favorites) and while I do not like Venus, I can appreciate the effort on that one. Therein lies the difference between what she did with it and what she does these days - the mistakes she made on the first came from taking risks, while the mistakes she made after TBK seem to have come from being in a comfort zone. Which one of the latest 3 albums can we say was an attempt at changing or improving her sound? I hate Datura with a passion, but I'd rather hate a song where she tried too hard than hate one where she didn't try enough. Tori is simply too good to be mediocre.

I also agree about the live disc on Venus. Like I said, I haven't listened to a lot of her latest recordings, but I think she was one hell of a performer circa 1998.

Haven't listened to Midwinter much yet. I like it, but it being an album with a different concept, with half of the songs not being her compositions and the other half having a more specific thematic I wouldn't put it in the same category as her regular releases. Same with SLG.

^I guess Garlands can be considered a b-side. But Tori doesn't have b-sides anymore cause she puts them all in the albums!

Not to mention there is no such thing as a b-side anymore, now they're called iTunes bonuses, also known as fuck-you-third-world.

Toast
The Beekeeper
Original Sinsuality
Garlands
Father's Son

As you can see, I can't stand AATS!

To Venus and Back "is the last great album of Tori, the CD 1 is a masterpiece, is a disc for my progressive rock, the cd 2 is also incredible live performances are brutal, sugar is my favorite, but then as Tori lost that strength and inspiration, Scarlet's Walk is a good album but only half of the songs are incredible, the rest are boring and the last 3 discs are the same, only rescued a few songs, Tori onto great disks before now only makes amazing songs good, well that's my opinion, even so I still hope a masterpiece of Tori ... and it will do because she is a musical genius¡¡ :green:and I LOVE YOU TORI FOREVER¡¡¡¡ :eyeroll:
